Fire Damper Inspection & Compliance

All fire safety systems must be annually inspected & professionally maintained by certified engineers to ensure the safety of building occupants – a faulty damper will not prevent the spread of fire/smoke.

What is a fire damper inspection & compliance survey & why is it important to have one?

Fire & smoke dampers are installed within the duct system to prevent the spread of fire from one fire compartmentation zone to another. Should a fire break out and get into the ventilation system, the damper will close of the supply of clean and/or dirty air which will increase the spread of the fire and smoke into other areas of the building.

All fire safety systems must be annually inspected & professionally maintained by certified engineers to ensure the safety of building occupants – a faulty damper will not prevent the spread of fire/smoke.

How Often Should You Test?

BS 9999:2017 states: “All fire and smoke dampers are to be inspected and performance tested annually by competent persons and any defects are to be logged, with necessary action taken and certificates of testing to be obtained.”

Manufacturers of fire and smoke dampers may have their own recommendations for testing frequency on more than an annual basis.

What we do

  • An initial assessment to the building and the fire compartmentation is logged on our online reporting system to identify the location of the damper, type, its condition and if there are any fire breaches; photographic evidence will also be provided, and a full and detailed report will be provided on completion.
  • A detailed quotation will be provided to carry out the testing and inspection of the dampers.
  • If we are engaged to carry out the testing and inspection, on completion of the work, a full and detailed report will be provided.
  • If a damper is found to be faulty and needs to be replaced, on completion of the work an IFC Certificate of compliance and conformity will be provided.

More Information

Meritas carry out inspection, testing and remedial works on fire and smoke dampers as well as motorised fire and smoke dampers (MFD’s). Where the MFD’s are linked to the fire alarm system and building management system (BMS) we will carry out a test and inspection to make sure the ‘Cause and Effect’ meets the fire strategy and building regulations.

We also carry out tests on the Fireman’s Override Panel to establish and confirm the Cause and Effect meets the building Fire Strategy.

Fire Compartmentation Analysis

Fire Compartmentation is an important part of Passive Fire Protection. Providing compartmentation to current Building Regulation and British Standards requirements involves sub-dividing buildings into manageable areas of risk, thereby preventing the spread of fire, smoke and toxic gases and providing valuable time to evacuate the building.

Compliance Inspections

All public buildings will have fire compartmentation built into them to prevent the spread of fire and smoke and provide safety and protection for the people within the building. Over time, the infrastructure, usage and design of the building will change. New data and electrical cables, pipes and ducting will be installed; it is for this reason that a fire compartmentation survey should be carried out to assess what changes have been made in the infrastructure and to identify if there are any breaches in the fire compartmentation wall.
